Autumn Peltier receives national recognition award

A Manitoulin Island woman who has been advocating for clean water since she was nine years old received national accolades for her work at a gala held this past weekend.

According to the release, this Saturday Autumn Peltier received the Community Hero Award at the 25th Annual Canada Walk of Fame Gala.

Peltier told the crowd it was an honour & high moment to be recognized for her work, adding we need to continue to collaborate and listen to our youth as it is their future.

Canada’s Walk of Fame Community Hero Program, presented by Maple Leaf’s Sports & Entertainment, selects a Canadian under 30 who positively influences the lives of others and makes a profound impact on their communities and beyond.

Peltier received a donation to help raise awareness and advocate for her cause.

In April 2019, Peltier was appointed Chief Water Commissioner by the Anishinabek Nation and has spoken about the issue of contaminated water on Indigenous reserves in Canada at the United Nations. For her activism, Peltier was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
