NDP MP Charlie Angus of Timmins —James Bay secured a major win for Northern Ontario with the Liberals agreeing to change the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act to protect post-secondary institutions from using the act and declaring bankruptcy, a move that hurts it workers. In 2022, Angus says he introduced a private members bill to change the act after nearly 200 staff and faculty members lost their jobs without severance due to Laurentian University invoking insolvency proceedings.
In addition, he has also raised the issue in question period, in press conferences and has talked directly to the relevant government officials on the issue.
Angus emphasizes closing that avenue is a huge win for the North ensuring it never happens again and workers at public universities get the pension and severance they are owed.
