Blind River council has approved a Municipal Accommodation Tax, which will apply to visitors looking for a place to stay overnight for less than 30 days at a motel, hotel, inn, or B&B.
Town council has approved a four percent levy for travellers paying for short-term accommodation in the town.
Facilities and community services director Karen Bittner told council the tax was introduced in Ontario a couple of years ago allowing municipalities to levy the tax for short stays.
She says the tax would be collected by the owner of the facility and then would go towards a provincial fund to assist in paying for municipal services, such as infrastructure upgrades.
Bittner stresses it is not a tax on property owners, it is a tax on users who access accommodation facilities.
Following her presentation, council unanimously approved the bylaw.
