Orange Shirt Day being celebrated on Thursday

Schools across the country including throughout the local districts will be taking part in Orange Shirt Day this week.

The day runs in partnership with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which takes place on Saturday.

However, students at local area schools on Manitoulin Island and along the North Shore will wear orange on Thursday because there is a PD Day on Friday.

They are asked to wear the shirts that day in recognition of those who lost their lives and their childhoods at Residential Schools and in honour of people whose lives were so traumatically impacted.

Espanola High School will host a live broadcast from Ottawa from 11am to 1pm and various classes and clubs have also organized events throughout the day.

The inspiration for Orange Shirt Day came from residential school survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad, who shared her story at a St. Joseph Mission Residential School Commemoration Project and Reunion event held in Williams Lake, British Columbia, in the spring of 2013.
