New fish farm partnership on Manitoulin Island

Two Manitoulin Island fish farm operations have signed a partnership to work together, not only for economic reasons but with a holistic approach to fish farming.

Sheshegwaning First Nation’s Odawa Island Farm has signed a new partnership with Cedar Crest Farms/Springhills Fish.

Sheshegwaning Chief Alana Endanawas says Odawa Island Farm began five years ago but only ever operated as a small pilot site adding the new partnership now opens opportunities to grow more rainbow trout than ever before.

RJ Taylor, who co-owns the Cedar Crest Farms/Springhills Fish with his sister Arlen says they couldn’t be more delighted to be in business with Sheshegwaning adding they share the same values for eco-friendly production.

He adds they will be using offshore technology to grow fish in floating nets in the lake, raising trout/steelhead using low densities, sustainable diets, humane harvesting, and other ethical practices all eco-certified by Best Aquaculture Practices and being recommended by Ocean Wise for sustainability.

The fish will be grown and then sold in local markets.
