North Shore mourns the loss of two local area notables – Van Norman and Haegeman

Two prominent North Shore residents have passed away.

Tania Van Norman of Webbwood, an advocate for children, passed away April 27th following a battle with cancer.

A sexual assault survivor, she founded the Secrets “Protect Our Children, STOP Sexual Abuse” advocacy group in 2002 and in her role as a personal support worker, assisted many children and their families over the years.

She was also a well-known volunteer and lent her expertise to many groups throughout the North Shore

She was 53.

Well known historian, author, and volunteer John Haegeman of McKerrow passed away on May 1st.

Haegeman took his taxidermy to a new level as a fur-trapper co-founding the Canadian Taxidermist Association.

He eventually developed a strong interest in the lumbering history of the North Shore exploring many abandoned camps and gathering one of the largest collections of lumber hammers used to mark logs for transport from 1870 to 1940.

Filled with photos and historical anecdotes, his book, The History and Location of North Shore Logging Camps was released in July of 2019.

He was 88.

Celebrations of Life will be held for the two later in the year.
