Nature Conservancy of Canada is currently raising funds to buy the largest privately-owned island on Lake Superior, Batchewana Island.
Boasting over 5,000 acres of forest and wetlands, along with 27 kilometres of shoreline, it’s home to gray wolves, black bears, moose and more than 30 bird species. That’s all according to the Conservancy, which says the island’s diverse forests could be subject to logging activities if the island isn’t conserved, adding part of the island is also currently zoned for recreational development.
The conservancy needs over $7 million to purchase the island property, and they’re 80% of the way there.
“This is our best and possibly last chance to see this incredible island protected for the future,” said Kaitlin Richardson, program director, Nature Conservancy of Canada. “The impact of conserving Lake Superior’s largest privately owned island cannot be understated. The communities of plants and animals that rely on Batchewana Island are unique and precious. I can’t wait for the day when we can say they get to stay that way forever.”
