Winter storm and rainfall warnings in effect

Mother Nature has apparently decided March will go out like a lion this year instead of a lamb.

Two different weather warnings are in place for Algoma-Manitoulin.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning in the Elliot Lake area for Friday night into Saturday while a rainfall warning is in place for the island.

With the winter storm warning, hazards include 15 to 30 cm of snow, with peak snowfall rates up to 8 cm/hr possible. Heavy snow and blowing snow will reduce visibility and there is a risk of freezing rain.

The weather agency says a first wave of snow will fall during the day, with a brief break in the evening before a second and much stronger system moves in Friday night.

Officials also say snow may mix with ice pellets or freezing rain at times Friday night.

On the island, Environment Canada says rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm are possible.

A first system will bring some snow or rain during the day then rain Friday night, which will be heavy at times overnight.

Thunderstorms are also possible.
