East Algoma OPP lays multiple charges related to fraud

A Spragge woman is facing several charges following a traffic stop by East Algoma OPP in Elliot Lake.

Constable Bev Gauthier says officers were conducting a traffic stop on Hutchison Avenue in Elliot Lake last Thursday, which led to the arrest of a woman in relation to a previous fraud and theft investigation.

Gauthier says police investigated a theft of cash complaint for the North Shore Township municipal office back on November 24th.

She says the investigation determined municipal cash had not been deposited with $6,500 going missing between September 2022 and November 2022.

Gauthier adds there was also a false payment and forged receipt for the same amount in an employee’s property tax account.

She says a 39-year-old woman from Spragge has been charged with criminal breach of trust, making a forged document, mischief to computer data and four counts of theft under $5,000.

Gauthier adds the woman is to appear in Blind River court on May 1st.
