Elliot Lake council expressed regret that it has decided to cancel the North Shore Challenge Drag Races this year.
City CAO Daniel Gagnon says the city has been involved in 21 drag races since 2000, but the city has usually had a third party involved to help organize the event, find the sponsor dollars and mobilize volunteers.
Gagnon says the event has been losing money for many years and recommended that council cancel this year’s event in the hopes a third party will come forward.
With the cancellation, he adds the city will save the $35,000 budgeted for the event.
It was pointed out by various councillors that they do not want to lose the event and hopes a third party steps up to organize it for 2024.
