Espanola council agrees to next steps to develop new apartment building

Potential construction of a new apartment building in the south end of town has led to Espanola council approving severance applications, but with conditions.

Joseph Burke, the town clerk, says council has given its approval for the severance to sever property with frontage on the Queensway Avenue for building a 12-plex apartment building that is being touted as affordable housing.

The application came from Olivadel Developments, which has built several new homes in the Queensway Avenue/Yusko Drive area in recent years.

Mary Gavel and Mary Bishop, both residents of Yusko Drive attended the hearing voicing concerns about the development including the potential impact of a new roadway, storage and fencing during actual construction and green space requirements.

Burke says those concerns will be addressed since the severance approval came with several conditions that must be met before the project moves ahead.

No timeline was discussed as to when construction would begin, since several legal requirements still must be met.
