New health-oriented pilot project gets funding support from the Espanola Lions

The Espanola Lions Club has lent its financial support to a new health pilot program looking at how a plant-based diet can provide more energy and weight loss.

Making some fundamental diet changes and exercise programming, is the basis of a new health pilot program in the Espanola area that advocates a plant-based diet to provide more energy, weight loss and overall improved general health.

The Espanola Lions Club is providing $2,000 towards the new project, which has three key elements; food, exercise and proper monitoring.

Leading the cooking classes is Sari Huntala of Spanish, who is also the editor and creator of Alive and Fit Magazine.

The pilot project has participants who must also commit to an exercise program provided by certified personal trainer Renee Desjardins, who is also a registered nurse.

Besides diet, the group takes part in the daily walking program at Espanola High and Susan Clark, another registered nurse who leads the Diabetes Education and Care Program, provides the glucose monitoring of the group.

The Espanola Lions Club presented the cheque earlier in February and it is hoped that once the pilot project results are tabulated, the program will expand in the Espanola area.
