Manitoulin OPP arrest three following drug raid in Espanola

Three people are facing various drug charges following a search warrant being executed in Espanola late last week.

Manitoulin OPP Constable John Hill says around 5:30 pm last Thursday, officers searched a residence on Albert Street.

He says they seized drugs suspected to be Opioids (Fentanyl) and Cocaine, digital scales, phones and $370 in cash.

Hill says three people were arrested and charged with various offences including possession for the purpose of trafficking and breach.

He explains the three include a 28-year-old from Evansville on Manitoulin Island, who also had other outstanding charges, and two women, a 30-year-old, and a 59-year-old, both from Espanola.

Hill adds the 28-year-old was the only one of the three denied bail and has been remanded into custody.

The details of the charges are as follows:

28-years-old, from Evansville was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Failure to comply with release order – other than attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC

The accused also had an outstanding arrest warrant from the Manitoulin Detachment (Espanola) of the OPP, which was executed for the following charges:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a prohibited device, contrary to section 92(2) of the CC
  • Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC
  • Personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice, contrary to section 403(1)(d) of the CC
  • Public mischief, contrary to section 140(1)(b)

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Virtual Bail Court in Sudbury on January 27, 2023 and was remanded into custody.

 

30-year-old woman from Espanola was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Opioid, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Virtual Bail Court in Sudbury on January 27, 2023 and was released from custody.

 

59-year-old from Espanola was charged with Fail to Comply with Undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on February 13, 2023.
