Long-time businessman with strong ties to Espanola passes away

A former businessman who had strong ties to the community of Espanola has passed away.

Franklin Blair Brown, who called the east coast and Northern Ontario his home, passed away on Christmas Day.

Brown was well known for his Captain Submarine franchises, which he established on the east coast and his flagship in Espanola back in the 1970s.

In the 1980s, he changed the name to Chimo’s and turned the franchise into a successful sit-down restaurant and bar in the Espanola Mall.

When he and his wife, Patti, returned to Nova Scotia in the mid-1990s, they continued with their franchise, which still exists at several locations today, and oversaw operations in casino restaurants in the province.

He was 79.
