OPP gearing up to host the Second Annual Marc Hovingh Memorial Run, Ride or Walk on Manitoulin

The Second Annual Marc Hovingh Memorial Run, Ride or Walk has been expanded this year to make it more family-friendly and to attract more participants.

OPP Community Safety Services provincial coordinator Adam Belanger says proceeds from the event will go towards the OPP Youth Foundation in memory of the late OPP Constable Marc Hovingh who was killed in the line of duty on November 19th, 2020.

He says the ride has now been expanded to include marathoners, short distance runners and walkers making it more family friendly.

Belanger says the main ride is a 110-kilometre circuit around Manitoulin Island, the second a 34-kilometre run around one of the Island’s largest lakes and a five-kilometre event for children and families.

He adds they hope to have plenty of people take part to raise $25,000 for the foundation through registration fees, pledges and donations.

The event set for Saturday, September 10th is now open for registration.

The first ride is a 110-kilometre ride around Manitoulin Island. There will also be a 34-kilometre ride around Mindemoya Lake, and the family five-kilometre event. All three start out from the community centre in Mindemoya at the J.H. Burt Memorial Arena.

The foundation will also be donating 10 bikes to recognized youth in the Manitoulin Island community along with shoes, shirts and shorts.

Registration to take part in the long ride is $50, while the fee is $25 for the short ride, run and walk.
