Teen charged with arson of former school in Elliot Lake

An Elliot Lake teen is facing an arson charge following an investigation into a fire that occurred back in November.

East Algoma OPP Constable Phil Young says back on November 19th the Elliot Lake Fire Department and OPP were called out to a fire at a vacant building, a former school, on Lisbon Road.

The building, which suffered heavy damage, is the former Notre Dame du Bois Joli, which also served the community for a time as College Boreal.

He says the fire looked to be deliberately set and unknown people vacated the property prior to the arrival of emergency services.

The Office of the Fire Marshal had also been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.

Young says a 16-year-old from Elliot Lake was arrested on Monday and charged with arson and mischief.

He says the accused is to appear in Elliot Lake court on October 4th.
