Food prices seen as a boost for grocery stores
A new poll shows that 78 percent of Canadians believe grocery stores are taking advantage of high inflation to boost their profits.
The Angus Reid survey also shows almost two-thirds of us have cut back on our discretionary spending, and 52 percent feel they can’t keep up with the increasing cost of living.
Three-quarters of respondents say they’re stressing about money these days.
Recall by Hyundai and Kia
Hyundai and its subsidiary, Kia, are telling the owners of 281 thousand SUVs in North America, to park their vehicles outside and keep them away from buildings for fear they may catch fire.
The recall, which involves more than 22 thousand vehicles in Canada, covers Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride SUVs built between 2020 and 2022.
The problem involves the trailer hitch wiring, which has been overheating.
So far, there’s no permanent fix for the problem.
Smuggling Brazilians out of Canada
An American man is in custody, after U-S officials allege he tried smuggling four illegal immigrants from Brazil into the country from Canada.
The U-S Border Patrol says a jet ski made two trips across the St. Clair River Saturday from Sarnia, Ontario.
The pilot of the jet ski, and the four Brazilians, were detained by U-S officers.
American officials add that the RCMP made two other arrests on the Canadian side.
Ukrainians will fight to the end
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says his country will fight Russia’s invasion “until the end.”
In a speech marking the country’s Independence Day, Zelensky says Ukrainians won’t make any concession or compromise to end the war and will continue fighting until all of its territories, including Crimea, is restored.
Officials have banned public gatherings to mark the day, for fear of heavy Russian artillery and missile attacks.
Today also marks six months since the invasion began.
To the moon we go once again
NASA has given the green light to Monday’s launch of Artemis One, the first step in the
agency’s return to the moon after 50 years.
The massive rocket and unmanned capsule are scheduled for a 42-day mission, circling the moon and testing its capabilities.
A manned mission, including a Canadian astronaut, will make a similar trip in 2024, with a landing to take place a year or two later.
The ultimate goal is to provide a manned station on the moon, and an orbiting space station as a way-stop on trips to Mars.
