Civic centre property declared surplus – art centre moves ahead elsewhere in Elliot Lake

Following an in-depth discussion, Elliot Lake council has decided not to rebuild on the former Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre, putting the property up for sale.

Council also approved renovations to the former Reel 2 Reel movie theatre at 16 Elizabeth Walk to turn it into a performing art and museum centre, replacing the amenities once offered by the civic centre, which was demolished following a roof cave-in.

It will house 130-seat theatre space, workshops and a museum.

The City has acquired FedNor funding of $750,000 and will also use the civic centre insurance settlement of $3.6 million dollars for the renovations.

To satisfy the requirement from FedNor, the project must be completed by March of next year so renovations are to begin immediately.
