Three contending for mayor in Espanola

Several candidates have come forward in Espanola for the upcoming municipal elections.

Former mayor Ron Piche has decided to run once again after serving two terms on council and losing to incumbent Jill Beer in the last election.

Former Espanola councillor Maureen Van Alstine who was ousted from council by court order earlier this Spring is taking a run at the mayor’s seat and new candidate Doug Gervais is also participating in the race.

Seven individuals have also submitted their papers to run for council including incumbents Heather Malott and Sandra Hayden.

First time candidates include John Maville, Aidan Kallioinen, Johnathan Nadeau, Joe Kowolski and Sue Allen.

Bob Clement, the incumbent chair of the Rainbow District School Board is the only declared candidate for a school trustee position.

The deadline for filing is August 19th with the election set for Monday, October 24th.
