Swimming advisory issued for Manitoulin Island beach

A popular Manitoulin Island beach has a swimming advisory in place.

A Sudbury Public Health manager, Jonathan Groulx, says routine water samples exceed the acceptable bacteriological water quality standards, so swimming advisory signs have been put in place at Mindemoya Beach.

He says a swimming advisory is a precautionary notice that informs the public about specific risks to health and safety.

Groulx explains going into the water when bacteria are present in high concentrations puts bathers at risk for infections, especially anyone who has open wounds.

He adds monitoring continues and the public will be notified when the beach is once again safe for access.
