Elliot Lake organizations team up to provide hot meals

Several organizations in Elliot Lake are coming together to create a harvest kitchen.

Theresa Hiuser of the Elliot Lake Women’s Group says the Maplegate House for Women and Larry’s Place have joined with the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank and Branch 581 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Elliot Lake to come together for the community.

She says it’s an alliance that is committed to feeding the vulnerable population of the local region.

She adds the harvest kitchen will be completely run by volunteers and has been funded through a $5,000 Ontario Food Security Grant for start-up costs.

She says the meals will be cooked and served at the Legion on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for free or pay what you can basis.

Details on times and start-up will be made available soon.

Still, with the story, The head of the U-N’s World Food Program says the current food affordability crisis could turn into a food availability crisis in the next year unless urgent action is taken.
Patrick Beasley says the number of people classified as “food insecure” more than doubled, to 276 million, during the COVID-19 crisis and the war that’s disrupted Ukrainian grain supplies has increased that number by another 35 percent.
He says 50 million people around the world are now just one step away from famine.
