Swimmer gives up on campaign to swim around Manitoulin Island

The cold water of Lake Huron has led to a Sudbury man giving up on trying to swim around Manitoulin Island.

Matthieu Bonin says since Canada Day, he has started out three times from Little Current but was only able to get to Wiikwemkoong before having to give up his goal of swimming the 350 kilometres around Manitoulin Island.

He says the water temperature dropped to around 45 degrees and he experienced hypothermia even though he was wearing a wet suit, so he had to give up.

However, he adds the money raised for Multiple Sclerosis, which he is still waiting for the final figure, is what will make the biggest difference.

Bonin adds he loves long-distance swimming and will consider trying again, perhaps next year.
