Old Mindemoya School gets a reprieve

A committee dedicated to saving what they consider a heritage school on the Island has got some great news.

Friends of the Mindemoya Old School president Jan McQuay says the Municipality of Central Manitoulin council has approved a 21-year lease to the Friends which is great news for everyone who worked to save the school from being demolished.

She adds plans are in the works to create multiple spaces for artists and small compatible businesses to make, showcase and sell their wares on the main floor.

McQuay says a seniors connection centre will be established on the lower floor for seniors to socialize, craft and take part in various projects.

She adds the group boasts over 300 members and the work is already beginning on converting the building into a viable contributor to the Manitoulin community with a grand opening tentatively planned for the fall.
