Special Olympics coming to North Bay

Near North Special Olympics is hosting their first games in three years on Saturday in North Bay.

“We’re really excited,” says Rob Saunders, School Groups Coordinator. “It’s been a long time.  The athletes are so pumped to see some of their friends that they haven’t seen in three years, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

He says dozens of athletes will be converging on Cundari Field at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall.

“We have a total around 70 athletes joining us. They’re coming in from Sudbury, Manitoulin, North Bay, West Nipissing, all from our area,” Saunders says.

He also says the games, which feature all of the events included in a track and field meet, have also been renamed in honour of one of their long-time athletes.

“Special Olympics have renamed our games as ‘Hometown Games’ so we have changed our name to the Jack Lyons Memorial Special Olympics Hometown Games,” Saunders says.

Spectators are welcome to the event, which runs from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday.
