Former candidate will be asked to fill council void

Espanola councillors have decided to go back to the election of 2018 in filling a vacant position on council.

Espanola council has six meetings left before the end of its term, so with the removal of Maureen Van Alstine as councillor, the rest had to decide how to fill the vacancy.

Van Alstine was removed from her position two weeks ago after being found guilty in court of violations of the Municipal Act.

Town Clerk Joseph Burke had suggested a motion that council post the vacancy for two weeks and council choose from members of the public who had expressed an interest in filling the position.

However, Councillor Ken Duplessis says there were seven candidates in the last election and Ron Duplessis, a former councillor who lost in the 2018 election, should be asked if he would be interested in filling the position.

The motion was amended and if Ron Duplessis turns down the invitation, then the position will be posted publicly.
