Blind River council supports ban all new quarry developments

Blind River council is endorsing a call to ban all new quarry developments in Ontario.

Reform Gravel Mining Coalition northern representative Rhonda Kirby met with the council Monday night to talk about the ban.

Also a member of the group; Demanding a Moratorium Now, she told the council they are also focused on halting a gravel pit development in the Township of the North Shore.

She says the pit could have a negative impact on the environment surrounding Lake Lauzon, Long Lake and the Serpent River watershed, and threaten the habitat of some local endangered species including the Blanding’s Turtle.

Kirby points out that a halt on the proposal was heard by the Ontario Land Tribunal in February and stakeholders are waiting for the final decision.

In the end, the council endorsed the ban and will forward the resolution to the Ontario government.
