Elliot Lake Fire Department battles two fires

Elliot Lake Fire Chief John Thomas says his firefighters were out battling two fires yesterday in the city.

He says a residential fire started around ten am yesterday morning at the row house complex on Valley Crescent.

Thomas says upon arrival, the crew reported heavy smoke and flames showing from the middle unit and had some difficulty getting the fire under control with heavy damage done to the row house complex.

He adds firefighters rescued one tenant from the second storey who was treated on scene and released.

Thomas says it took the department over eight hours to get it under control, there is no cost estimate for the damage and the cause remains unknown.

His department and the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office are continuing the investigation.

Thomas adds the second fire broke out along the bush trail behind Esten Drive South just before noon.

He says his crews had difficulty putting it out due to high winds and the Ministry of Natural Resources was called in to assist.

That fire was extinguished by mid-afternoon.
