Flag-raising for Pride taking place in Elliot Lake

Supporters of Pride will be taking part in a flag-raising ceremony today in Elliot Lake.

Elliot Lake Pride will raise 2 Spirit and rainbow flags at the Miner’s Memorial today to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

Serpent River First Nation Band Council, councillors from Elliot Lake and members of the community will all be present.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was created in Montreal in 2004 and the date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

May 17th is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal with the 2022 theme being Our Bodies, Our Lives, Our Rights.

The flag-raising takes place at 8 am this morning.
