Mariupol has fallen

Ukrainian officials say the siege of the devastated southern port city of Mariupol is over.

Several hundred soldiers holding out at a massive steel plant in the city have surrendered to Russian forces, and have been evacuated. Ukraine’s

president, Volodimir Zelensky says he’s hopeful that the remainder can be brought out safely.

The city had been under Russian attack for more than 80 days with thousands of civilians thought to have been killed.

Turkey opposes NATO membership for Finland and Sweden

Turkey’s president says he opposes applications from Finland and Sweden to join NATO.

Recep Erdogan says the two countries harbour Kurdish groups that Turkey considers terrorist organizations and he won’t allow nations that could pose a threat to Turkey’s national security into the alliance.

All 30 current members of NATO must approve new applicants before they can sign up.

Other Western officials say they’re confident Turkey’s objections can be addressed.

Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, arrive in St. John’s, Newfoundland today to begin a three-day tour of Canada.

They’ll also have stops in Ottawa and the Northwest Territories as part of a worldwide series of visits by the Royal Family to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne.

The main focus of the trip is to mark reconciliation between Canada’s indigenous people, and climate change.

It’s the 19th trip to Canada for Prince Charles and the 5th for the Duchess of Cornwall.
