Young Women in the Trades Day

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is doing its part in ensuring young women know about the potential for a career in the trades.

Paula Trainor, the board’s Experiential Learning Lead says the Young Women in the Trades Day was recently held at St. Mary’s College for Grade 7 and 8 students as a pilot project.

She adds the goal of the day was to provide information to students approaching high school age about the skilled trades and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program while helping break stereotypes about the perception of women working in trades.

Trainor says the day included guest speaker Desiree Pine from Garden River First Nation talking about her work as a heavy equipment operator, a woodworking shop, and a first-hand look at a second cabin being completed by college students at Pancake Bay Provincial Park.

With the success of the pilot, the board is looking at a minimum of two more years of offering the program.
