Domtar makes largest private land conservation agreement in Canadian history

Domtar, a division of Paper Excellence, has made what is being called the largest private land conservation agreement in Canadian history.

Senior vice-president of commercial, pulp and paper Rob Melton says the company is excited to be donating over 1,400 square kilometres of land near Hearst, Ontario, to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

Melton says the land will be used for research and conservation adding the company has not had any operations in the area for several years.

He adds the transfer of ownership of the property for $7 million is below the appraised value.

Conservancy program director Kristyn Ferguson says conservation opportunities of this magnitude are incredibly rare, and the conservancy is thrilled to have the chance to work at this scale to make a difference for nature, wildlife, and people.
