Weaponry on its way to Ukraine
Several NATO allies are sending more weapons to Ukraine.
Following a conference call with other leaders, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will be sending heavy artillery to the embattled nation, as Russia begins its offensive to conquer eastern regions of the country.
He says details will be released in a few days.
U-S President Joe Biden is expected to announce another 800-million dollars in weapons donations to Ukraine.
American officials have confirmed that new supplies of warplanes have been transferred to Ukraine to maintain the country’s ability to defend its skies.
The big question now is will the arms arrive in time to help Ukrainian forces blunt the Russian offensive.
Mariupol continues the fight
Ukrainian officials say efforts will resume today to evacuate civilians from the devastated southern port city of Mariupol, which has been besieged for more than seven weeks.
Tens of thousands of non-combatants remain in the city, and earlier efforts to get them out have failed.
The commander of the Ukrainian forces holed up in the last stronghold, a massive steel plant, says his men will not surrender, despite another deadline set by Russian commanders.
At least one-thousand civilians are said to be sheltering with the soldiers.
Sunwing suffers cyber attack
The president of Sunwing Airlines says passengers will be compensated, as massive delays continue to affect thousands of travellers.
But there’s no indication what form that compensation will take.
The airline has been hit by massive problems with the systems handling check-in and boarding.
Sunwing says the problems are at their service provider and are the result of a cyber attack.
Company officials say they have no idea when the problems will be resolved.
Housing prices continue to rise
Housing prices across Canada are expected to continue to rise through the rest of this year.
The Canadian Real Estate Association says their latest figures show the average price of a home, nationally, is now close to 800-thousand dollars, an increase of 11 per cent over the past year.
But Royal Lepage says it’s latest analysis shows the average home cost in Canada has now reached 857-thousand dollars, up 25 per cent over the past year.
While housing sales have declined recently, both groups point to the continued shortage of homes on the market for the higher prices.
They say the situation should ease early next year.
Uber removes mask mandate
Uber Canada will follow the lead of its American parent, and drop the requirement that drivers and passengers wear face masks.
The regulation will be ended Friday in all provinces, except Quebec.
However, drivers and passengers can still insist that masks be worn during their ride.
And the company still “strongly advises” that face masks be used.
