Sagamok-Anishnabek First Nation chief responds to ‘shameful’ social media post

The Chief of Sagamok-Anishnabek First Nation has made a statement about a social media post he calls “shameful expressions caught on video”.

Gimaa Alan Ozawanimke says on the weekend of February 5th and 6th, the community witnessed videos circulating on social media platforms depicting young adults mocking the lived experiences of those who attended the Indian residential schools.

He says on the video can be seen a social gathering in Massey with a young Massey man, inebriated and draped in an Every Child Matters flag hollering and dancing to drum music while others cheered him on.

Ozawanimke says the video has distressed Elders and grandparents, and it diminishes their residential school experiences and disrespects the memory of the children that did not return home.
