Espanola council approves playground five-year plan

Espanola council has supported a recommendation from the Recreation & Culture Advisory Committee for the upgrading of playgrounds in town.

The committee recommended the Playground Replacement Strategy that playground equipment be replaced in a specific order over the next five years.

The Committee needed council’s approval to ensure all the playground meets legal standards.

Funding of $100,000 has already been set aside and the approval follows the mandates of the 2017 Recreation Master Plan.

The plan proposes the following sequence for replacement:

2023 Sherwood Playground

The committee is in favour of replacing Sherwood Park to coincide with the installation of the Splash Pad to complete the site and not duplicate site remediation efforts later.

2022 Algoma Playground – only playground West of Highway 6, is a well-used playground and site of the Community Garden

2024 Adventure Playground to follow because it is the next busiest playground location

2025 Yocom Playground – is our smallest playground but recognized by the Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee as an essential asset to the neighbourhood. The Committee identifies equitable access for all families as an important value in playground replacement. Children should be able to access a playground by foot or bicycle and not be reliant on a caregiver for transportation.

2026 Clear Lake Beach Playground – selected as the last site for replacement because the park has recently benefited from a significant amount of investment to include the outdoor exercise equipment, accessible path development and accessible beach matting.

In 2021 Pinegrove Playground was upgraded and work is complete.
