Former deputy mayor passes away

Elliot Lake’s former deputy mayor, Al Collett, has passed away.  Collett died at the Toronto General Hospital on Tuesday.  Collett, who was 61, was the long-time owner-operator of AMP Electric and heavily involved with the chamber of commerce and at one point served as president.  In 2006 he ran for city council, but missed winning by one seat when he finished seventh.  However shortly after that there was a vacancy on council and Collett was appointed to the seat.  He ran again in 2010 and became deputy mayor but a run at the mayor’s seat last October didn’t pan out.  Visitations are this Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Elliot Lake Funeral Chapel.  That’s followed by a mass Monday at 11 A-M at St. Peter’s the Apostle Anglican Church.  Out of respect to Collett, City Hall is flying its flag at half-mast.
