Police use spike belt to apprehend fleeing driver

East Algoma OPP used a spike belt to apprehend a fleeing driver earlier this week.

OPP Constable Phil Young says on Tuesday morning shortly after 9 am, police were called out to a firearm-related occurrence on Highway 17 in the Township of North Shore.

He says the complainant reported that a friend had stolen their car and was on the way to Sault Ste. Marie adding the person had also made threats to kill people and harm themself with a firearm in their possession.

Young says police quickly located the vehicle on Highway 17, travelling westbound, but the driver refused to stop for police multiple times so a spike belt was utilized.

He says the driver a 55-year-old woman from Spanish was arrested and charged flight from a peace officer and possession of a dangerous weapon among others.

Charges laid include Dangerous Operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)

Flight From Peace Officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the CC

Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC

Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC

Take Motor Vehicle Without Consent, contrary to section 335(1) of the CC

Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
