Petition opposing transitional housing proposal in Elliot Lake

Some members of the Elliot Lake community have put together a petition to fight the establishment of two transitional homes in the city.

The Moose reported last week that the Elliot Lake Women’s Group Inc., which operates Maplegate shelter for women and Larry’s Place home for men, wants to establish two transitional homes to take pressure of the two existing shelters.
Elliot Lake’s Bylaw and Planning Committee heard the group’s presentation and have set a public hearing for December 6th.

Resident Denise McCrae has started a petition opposing the zone changes, which she states will have a potential loss of property values and a possible increase in crime due to the transitional nature of shelters.

The petition is being distributed in the neighbourhood to be presented to council as part of the December 6th hearing.
