Carbon Monoxide Week an important part of fire safety

It is Carbon Monoxide Week and Espanola Fire Chief Mike Pichor says it is important the public understand the difference between a fire alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm.

He says carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and tasteless and that is what makes it dangerous leading it to be called the silent killer.

Pichor says you must have a working CO alarm adjacent to each sleeping area of the home, if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.

He advises the public to test both their alarms now that the cooler temperatures are here.

Pichor adds he has some complimentary carbon monoxide alarms available so anyone who needs one is asked to drop by the fire hall to pick up one for their home.
