Elliot Lake curling club shutting down

The curling club in Elliot Lake is closing its doors.

Doug MacLeod the co-chair of the Deer Trail Curling Club says that’s due to ongoing financial pressures and the age of the building.

He says the building is one of the oldest structures in the city, over 60 years old, and with a new facility no longer being considered as part of the proposed new multi-use sports complex, the club does not have the $1.3 million needed for retrofits.

He adds the low turnout of volunteers and the challenges of the pandemic has led to the decision to close.

He says the board will be using what funds it has for the closure, which is now underway.
