Former Whitefish Falls artist finishes in top three at national art competition

An Indigenous artist who now lives in Ingersoll, but hails from Whitefish Falls, has placed in the top three for a prestigious art prize.

The Salt Spring National Art Prize announced its finalists for the fall exhibition earlier this year including the area’s own, Michael NF Cywink, not to be confused with his uncle, Mike Cywink Senior, another well-known local artist in his own right.

Cywink says he loves working with Indigenous youth throughout the school board in London with a focus on healthy relationships, leadership opportunities, and strong cultural components intertwined throughout.

He placed third overall in the People’s Choice category at the SSNAP Opening Gala in-person and virtual event held in British Columbia last week.

He adds his painting will now be part of a travelling exhibit, going from the Victoria Art Gallery in Victoria to the Pendulum Gallery in Vancouver.

Cywink extends a huge thank you to family, friends and supporters and plans to continue to advocate for Indigenous youth through his art.
