Sunday’s mining death at the Vale smelter in Copper Cliff was the fourth fatal mining accident in Sudbury since 2011. And that’s renewed calls by the NDP’s Mike Mantha for a review into mine safety in Ontario. Mantha is the party’s mine’s critic and all his earlier demands to review safety in mines have been ignored by the Liberal government. The miner who died on Sunday was 36-year-old Paul Rochette of Sudbury. Police have not yet released details on how he died or how a co-worker was seriously injured in the same accident. Meanwhile the mining death in Sudbury comes as the city kicks off a three day health and safety conference on mining. The conference, with more than 300 delegates, began on Tuesday. Participants in the mining industry are hearing how to deal with mining hazards through safety programs and technology.
