Retirement Living adds to the music program

Elliot Lake’s Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School is now able to teach stringed instruments to students through the assistance of Elliot Lake Retirement Living.

Principal Andrew Chi says prior to the pandemic the school had a guitar group led by Carol Norrish and other local guitarists who would volunteer their time, which in turn sparked the interest in playing the ukulele and guitar in many students.

He says while those visits stopped, the music did not, and the condition of the instruments was not the greatest.

Chi says the school applied for the Elliot Lake Retirement Living Community Grant of $2,250 and with the approval was able to buy 10 new ukuleles, six guitars, and 10 tuners purchased locally from George Copeland at North Channel Music.

Chi adds with the addition of the new instruments, they have expanded the music club at the school and hope to be able to entertain family and the public soon with newly acquired skills.
