2021_09_30 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, so that’s what the show is focused on. I hope this page provides a good resource for today. I’ve included a list of events in the local community to commemorate the day as well as resources to continue learning beyond today.

Events:

  • Mississauga First Nation and W.C. Eaket school in Blind River are hosting a ceremony and  walk starting at the daycare parking lot at 10am.
  • Sagamok Youth Council has a traffic slowdown from 12:30 to 3:30pm on highways 6 and 17.
  • Espanola has a Walk of Reflection starting at 7:00pm at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex outdoor track.

Resources:

Like Brent Bissailion, Chief of Serpent River First Nation, said in a recent press release: ‘Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’. It’s free, and it’s essential. Here is a link to the Calls to Action.

Books:

  • The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America – Thomas King

Ojibwe Word of the Day:

Mackenzie Jacobs from Serpent River First Nation joins the show every week for the Anishinaabemowin Word of the Week. One of the first words/phrases she taught us was ‘Every Child Matters’ – gichi-apiitendaagoziwag akina abinoojiiyag. If you forgot how to say it, here’s the pronunciation:
