Local woman representing Northern Ontario at national event

A woman from Sagamok-Anishnabek First Nation will represent Northern Ontario on the world stage next week speaking out about residential schools and multi-generational trauma.

Twenty-year-old Sarah Jacobs was crowned Miss Northern Ontario 2021 earlier this month after taking part in a virtual pageant.

Due to COVID-19 most of the competitions have been held online, but she will be travelling in person to Toronto at the end of the month to take part in the live Miss World Canada Nations competition in Toronto.

She says her pride is in her Indigenous culture, language, and customs, adding she is also passionate about the outdoors, music, family and helping animals in shelters.

A new graduate she plans to attend college for medical esthetics and establish her own business in the future.

According to pageant coordinatior, Christi Duke, Jacobs will bring a unique perspective to the national competition.

The Miss Northern Ontario pageant was held online this year due to Covid, the delegates had to send in videos of themselves modeling, as well as photographs and essays, and were judged via zoom by a panel of judges from Canada and the USA.

Duke says Sarah takes pride in learning her culture and language. A major portion of the Miss World Canada pageant is the delegates Beauty with a Purpose project. The delegates must create a platform which they will promote throughout their reign.

Sarah’s beauty with a purpose project focuses on residential schools in Canada. She’s a third generation survivor from the Peter Clavers Residential School for Boys in Spanish. Her grandfather attended when he was a young boy and never spoke about the horrible things that happened in that school.

Sarah wants to spread awareness for every child matters to the public’s attention and give people the realization of the traumatic events that happened in these schools all over Canada, adds Duke.

There is also a People’s Choice Award online to vote for Jacobs. Visit https://catchthecrown.com/pageant/miss-world-canada-2021  for more information. Miss World® Canada is the official preliminary to the MISS WORLD® pageant, which remains the oldest and largest pageant in the world.
