Foleyet killing of white moose in 2020 was lawful, says ministry

No charges are being laid in connection with the killing of a white moose in 2020.

Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry spokesperson Jolanta Kowalski said the harvest near Foleyet was done by someone exercising their harvesting rights.

Flying Post First Nation member Troy Woodhouse says it is sad the sacred animal was killed but adds the ministry findings brings some closure.

The week of October 26th, 2020, two cow moose were harvested one being a white moose.

The news about the killing of the white cow moose, also known as the spirit moose, sparked social media outrage across the country.

Shooting and harvesting white moose is illegal in the local wildlife management units 30 and 31.

Woodhouse says the $6,000 raised through his GoFundMe page will be used to set up signage along Highway 144 and Highway 101 letting people know it’s illegal to hunt white moose in those management areas.
