The Rainbow District School Board has laid off an unspecified number of non-teaching staff has it wrestles with a tough budget. The board has also reduced professional learning for staff and cut some programs. The cutbacks are the result of a budget shortfall of almost $1.7 million. The shortfall is the result of the province giving the board less money because of ongoing declining enrolment. When school starts up again this fall, the board is expecting a further drop of 279 full-time equivalent students. The board balanced its $183 million budget by using $463-thousand from its reserve fund.
