International Overdose Awareness Day: A Day to Remember

Every year, on August 31st, communities around the world come together to remember those lost to overdose, acknowledge the grief of loved ones left behind, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and reduce the impact of overdose.
Drug Strategy Coordinator Cami Coutu says the Sault Ste. Marie and Area Drug Strategy committee is inviting the public to Clergue  Park on August 31st, from 11 am to 2 pm and to bring a photo of someone they have lost to add to the memorial display.

She adds laminating materials will be available to protect the photos and for those unable to attend photos can be emailed.
Coutu says Northern Ontario communities, including the Algoma region, had the highest rates of opioid-related deaths in 2020 and compared to 2019 data, rates of opioid-related deaths tripled in 2020, from 14.9 to 46.5 per 100,000 people.

If you do not have access to print a photo, you can email a photo to [email protected] and the committee will have it printed and available. If you do not have a photo, there will be other options available for you to decorate in honor of your loved one.
Naloxone training will be available on site. COVID-19 protocols will be in effect – wearing a mask is recommended. For more information on this event or on local support services available, visit https://ssmareadrugstrategy.ca/.
