Heat advisory continues in all three districts

Algoma Public Health and Public Health Sudbury & Districts have issued extreme heat warnings.  Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for most of the Algoma District for Thursday, August 19 through Saturday, August 21.

Although Environment Canada has not issued one for the Manitoulin or Sudbury districts, the health agency concurs with Algoma health that the high humidity could also cause ill effects in those areas.

Exposure to extreme heat and humidity can lead to illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” explains Melissa Francella, (FRAN-chell-lah) a public health inspector with Algoma Public Health.

She adds those most at risk for developing heat-related illnesses include infants and children, older adults, those with chronic health conditions, and people who exercise or are involved in demanding outdoor work for prolonged periods.

Francella stresses avoid the sun, wear a hat, carry plenty of water and stay cool.

Follow these tips to help beat the heat.

  • Avoid going out in the sun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • If you are in the sun, wear a hat (wide-brimmed if possible).
  • Wear sunscreen.
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing.
  • Spend some time in air-conditioned places such as a shopping mall.
  • Take frequent cool showers or baths.
  • Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee, and cola.
  • Cook during the coolest times of the day.
  • Reschedule outdoor sports practices, exercising, etc.

In addition, visit adults who are at higher risk of a heat illness at least twice a day. Infants and children also need frequent watching for signs of a heat-related illness. A reminder to follow COVID-19 public health practices when checking on friends or neighbours to keep yourself and others safe and healthy.

Check-in with your local municipality for a list of cooling centres available.
