Serpent River First Nation artist Isaac Murdoch is participating in a national billboard campaign to raise awareness about residential schools.
Isaac Murdoch’s rendering of an old pictograph is one of nine pieces of original Indigenous artwork featured in Artists Against Racism’s The Honour Project that is on display on billboards in Sudbury and throughout the country.
The Honour Project, launched in June, honours Indigenous children whose remains have been discovered over the last few months.
Murdoch says his image is of a seated child with feathers in their hair against an orange background represents, what he states, is the genocide that occurred against Indigenous peoples.
The artist adds the rendering is what is believed to be an old pictograph discovered near the site of the old residential schools in Spanish, west of Sudbury, which could be hundreds of years old.
