Governor General to be sworn in today

Mary Simon becomes Canada’s first indigenous Governor General later today.

The Inuit leader and former diplomat will be sworn into office in the Senate.

But the ceremony, usually full of pomp and circumstance, will be pared back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only 44 people will be allowed into the Senate chamber, which is usually packed for these ceremonies.

Those present will also have to wear masks and remain physically distant.

Her first speech as governor-general will concentrate on the themes of youth and reconciliation.

Simon replaces Julie Payette, who resigned in January following a report that criticized her for creating a “toxic workplace” at Rideau Hall.
